Abstract

The widespread use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) among university students has created new patterns in religious consultation practices, particularly in answering fiqh-related questions. This study aims to analyze how students of Diponegoro University (UNDIP) utilize AI in seeking religious answers and to examine its impact on the perception of traditional religious authority. This research employs a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 14 informants consisting of representatives from campus Da’wah institutions across faculties and a campus mosque supervisor. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings indicate that AI is frequently used as an initial reference, especially for routine or sensitive questions, due to its accessibility, speed, and anonymity. However, when determining fiqh rulings, students still prioritize traditional religious authorities such as kiai or ustadz who possess recognized scholarly legitimacy. The study reveals a hybrid pattern of religious authority in which technological rationality and traditional legitimacy coexist dynamically. This research emphasizes the importance of critical religious literacy to ensure that AI functions as a complementary tool without diminishing the depth of religious understanding.
